What is ESG?

ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) represents a set of environmental, social, climate, and governance criteria and best practices. These criteria influence the business world in terms of risk analysis and investment decision-making, highlighting responsible organizations committed to sustainability.

Integrating ESG into organizational strategies is crucial to generate positive impacts for society while aligning with financial returns, positively influencing reputation and effective management of operational, regulatory, and legal risks, as well as creating business and investment opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

BTG Pactual maintains a robust ESG and Sustainable & Impact Investing framework that encompasses the Board of Directors, the ESG Committee, the CEO, the Co-Heads of ESG & Impact Investing, and the respective business heads. We seek maximum expertise within our team: more than financial advisors, we strive to be a leading advisor on climate change in Latin America.

The ESG head is responsible for integrating ESG into BTG Pactual's strategy, businesses, and activities through risk assessment and mitigation, as well as communicating the progress in this area, while the Impact Investing head connects global investors to Sustainable & Impact Investing opportunities in Latin America.

BTG Pactual adopts policies on Diversity; Responsible Investment; Private Social Investment; Social, Environmental, and Climate Responsibility; and Occupational Health and Safety, in addition to the global Tax Policy.

There are also sector policies for Agribusiness; Weapons and Ammunition; Beverages; Construction; Forests and Timber Extraction; Tobacco; Wind, Hydroelectric, Solar, Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas Energy Generation; Mining, Pulp and Paper; Oil and Gas; Chemical and Petrochemical; Steel and Metallurgy; Energy Transmission and Distribution; Transportation and Logistics; and Slaughterhouses and Meatpacking Plants.

Yes, BTG Pactual has an ESG Committee. It is chaired by CEO Roberto Sallouti and holds monthly meetings.

Its scope is to support the Bank's Board of Directors in defining strategies, guidelines, and measures to adopt best practices, aiming at identifying and mitigating social, environmental, climate, and regulatory risks.

Given the relevance of the topics covered, the Committee is composed of C-Level representatives (CFO, CRO, CSO, CCO, Head of Human Resources, and Head of ESG) and members of Senior Management, and is responsible for supervising and managing the execution of ESG policies and their developments.

Considering the main environmental and social issues impacting society and the relevance of ESG factors to the continuity of our clients' businesses, BTG Pactual has made several commitments. Among them are:

  • Supporting clients in the transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy.
  • Being a reference on climate change in Latin America.
  • Offering credit and promoting sustainable practices in the SME segment.
  • Developing policies, procedures, and tools to carry out and ensure the analysis of social, environmental, and climate risks in the Credit and Investment portfolio.
  • Developing an ESG framework for analyzing social, environmental, and climate risks of counterparties.
  • Preparing an ESG & Impact Investing newsletter, to be sent to clients monthly, with relevant news on the subject and information about the recommended ESG portfolio.
  • Supporting the integration of ESG criteria in the selection of Asset Management assets and Investment Banking transactions.
  • Participating monthly in the integration of new employees during new hire training.
  • Promoting regular training for all employees to inform and raise awareness about the Bank’s ESG processes, policies, and practices.
  • Supporting internal awareness actions carried out monthly by the Marketing team.
  • Connecting global investors to sustainable investment opportunities in Latin America.

Decision-making across all Bank’s activities and relationships is guided by leading social, environmental, and climate standards, as well as best practices. In credit operations, for example, any relationship with companies or individuals involved in cases of slave or child labor, or activities that violate international treaties, is prohibited by the policy and included in assessment operations.

We conduct Know Your Client (KYC) analyses carried out initially through automated systems, such as the Delfos System, which has an extensive database of public socio-environmental and climate risk data and standardized rules to identify flags applicable to each type of relationship. If any flag is identified as non-compliant with the Business Principles and Ethics Code, the Social, Environmental, and Climate Responsibility and Risk Policy, or other internal BTG Pactual procedures and policies, the ESG and AML teams are automatically engaged to manually analyze the case, depending on the topic. Both teams have veto and approval authority, and joint approval is required for the relationship to continue.

We also follow 20 Sector Policies with specific guidelines for different industries, such as various types of energy generation, mining, agribusiness, and construction, for example.

We constantly pursue sustainable development. Therefore, we work continuously to reduce the environmental impact of our offices through ongoing monitoring of eco-efficiency indicators.

Regarding water efficiency, the administration of the building where our main office in São Paulo is located drilled an artesian well, in addition to harvesting rainwater and maintaining an effluent treatment station. At the building where our headquarters is in Rio de Janeiro, there is significant engagement work with tenants to encourage more efficient water consumption. Measures have also been implemented in the building common areas to reduce water flow in taps and toilet flush systems.

To save energy, our main office in São Paulo has a central air conditioning system with high energy efficiency, and all lighting uses low-consumption LED lamps. The building also has elevators with energy storage systems that shut off when not in use, and it has a thermoelectric plant providing 100% autonomy in case of a power outage from the utility company. Additionally, we have workstations in common areas equipped with solar panels.

We focus on preventing waste generation in our offices. When that is not possible, we prioritize the use of materials from sustainable sources, recycling, and proper disposal of waste. Recyclable waste is sent to recycling cooperatives, while organic waste is sent to composters and biodigesters.

We also carry out several actions in our offices, such as replacing plastic cups with durable materials, promoting monitor reuse by selling them to employees at cost (with proceeds directed to organizations participating in the BTG Soma Environment program), and implementing selective waste collection.
